Janene Waudby
I am a self taught potter, specialising in alternative firing techniques. I throw my curved forms on the wheel or hand-build larger pieces. The work is either burnished or textured and stained with coloured terra sigilatta before being bisque fired. After the kiln firing, various techniques are used with woodshavings to stain the surface. The intention is to produce forms which are as authentic as nature itself. There is a theory that the artist attempting this is always doomed to fail but by allowing the fire to make its mark on each vessel, every piece is as unique and spontaneous as a piece of rock sculpted by the elements. In the workshop I will show some techniques around throwing various curved forms and also making narrow necks. I will also demonstrate some of the smoke firing techniques I have used.
