Open letter to First Minister John Swinney, Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes & Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, External Affairs & Culture, Angus Robertson,
We, the Scottish Potters Association, write to express our profound concern over the recent closure of Creative Scotland's Open Fund for Individuals. This decision poses a severe threat to the vitality of Scotland's craft sector, particularly to our community of ceramicists and artists who rely on this crucial funding to sustain and develop their practices.
As you are aware, the craft sector is a significant contributor to Scotland's cultural and economic fabric. The Open Fund has been an essential lifeline, supporting not only the creation of new work but also enabling artists to explore innovative techniques and reach wider audiences. In a climate where other funding opportunities are scarce, the closure of this fund will undoubtedly stifle creativity and limit opportunities for both emerging and established makers.
Our community is already facing significant challenges due to the cost-of-living crisis and a shrinking consumer base. The withdrawal of this support will exacerbate these challenges, leaving many without the necessary resources to continue their work. This not only endangers individual livelihoods but also threatens the cultural richness and diversity that Scotland is known for.
We urge you to reconsider this decision and to work with Creative Scotland to reinstate the Open Fund. This would demonstrate a commitment to supporting Scotland's creative industries and ensure that our nation's cultural legacy continues to thrive.
We look forward to your prompt attention to this urgent matter.
Yours sincerely,
Caroline Gault
Chair, Scottish Potters Association
