Max Ross is a ceramicist making work ranging from sculptures to functional tableware. The work Ross creates is inspired by the Scottish landscape, from the highlands to forests, and the botanical gardens of Scotland’s cities.
His sculptures draw inspiration from escapism, macro photography, and a desire for a deeper understanding of our natural environment.
Throughout his time at Gray’s School of Art, Ross was inspired by the nature surrounding the Garthdee campus. He would often go out into the wild to document what he could see and try to find ways of creating this within his work. The sculptures attempt to capture the close details observed with a macro lens to show the beauty of nature.
The same landscape also inspires the functional tableware. Using natural glaze materials found locally, Ross creates his own glaze recipes. These reproduce the colours and patterns of the sea, sky, and earth in his works. Atmospheric firings on all his work create spontaneous and unique results.
